New build penthouse
The site for this project was a roof, six storeys up, and minutes from Oxford Street, making it a challenging prospect for both design and construction. Getting planning permission was only possible if the penthouse was completely invisible from the street below. This was accomplished by containing the service accommodation to a strip along one side of the site, tucked under a shallow pitched roof. The main rooms could then be almost entirely glazed, overlooking the existing lightwell onto the garden, and views of central London beyond. Despite its linear plan, it achieves a fluid suite of corridorless spaces by using sliding walls and screens to divide and create rooms as needed.
